ASCEND ROCK CLIMBING COMPLEX
ARC302 Architectural Design: Technology, Spring 2021

for Wake Stone Corporation's Triangle Quarry
222 Star Ln, Cary, NC 27513

Students were assigned to design a rock climbing complex in the Triangle Quarry in the William B. Umstead State Park. This project consists of a continuous pathway embedded into the slope of the quarry, with programmatic structures dispersed along the pathway. At the end of the path is the rock climbing gym, built from the walls of the quarry. Connection to the unique physical environment and the excitement of being a rock climber was the main driver for the design. To improve this project, better representation in deliverables would strengthen the concept, as well as an experiment with the materiality to emphasize the goals of the project.
