CHARLOTTESVILLE CENTER FOR PUBLIC LIFE

ARC202 Architectural Design: Environment, Spring 2020

for the Charlottesville Historic Downtown Mall
1st St S & E Main St, Charlottesville, VA 22902

After on-site documentation, research, and analysis, create a public center that addresses the needs of the Historic Downtown Mall in Charlottesville.
This infill project sits on a street corner in the heart of the Downtown Mall. Utilizing a basement level under three floors, the center consists of galleries, studios, offices, classrooms, a cafe, and more. The public center experiments with the concept of interior and exterior - blending the two concepts throughout the different programs. A facade encompasses the project, allowing for outdoor spaces within the property lines. To improve this project, a study on the materiality would strengthen the focus on the blend of spaces.
