Students were assigned to redesign the cooling center for the unbuilt Miracle League of the Triangle. This project focuses on the juxtaposition between the historically orthogonal, masonry design of downtown Durham with the fluid movement of nature. The interior cooling center resides in a brick building along with a concession area and bathrooms. Extending from the roof of the cooling center is a dynamic wooden frame, with plants growing through connecting wires. Trees are utilized in order to provide the necessary shading for the surrounding area of the project. To improve this project, greater experimentation with the historical masonry of Durham would increase visual appeal and a more interesting, complementary design for the picnic area.
