ARC201 Architectural Design: Environment, Fall 2019

Find an object to drive the form of a spiritual complex. This project introduces students to a complex program, square footage requirements, and a common site.

This project uses the concept of the Vastu Purusha Mandala to create a monastery. Using the 8x8 grid and spiritual meanings assigned with the cardinal directions, the program is dispersed through three floors. A lavatory and sleeping areas are located on the ground floor. The second floor contains the chapel. The third floor consists of a kitchen area and a library. Exploration of different materials other than wood would strengthen this project. Emphasis on the use of a grid and spiritual meanings used for the composition could be better highlighted.
